Nothing To Do |
The things I think about. |
When shown a picture of MLK Jr in class today and asked who he was, one of my students raised her hand to answer. I did not really expect my 3-year-olds to be able to recognize and name him without further information, if they could do it at all. So, when she raised her hand, I did not think that her answer would be correct. I was curious, more than anything. I thought she might pull one of those “uhhhhhhhhhhhh… I don’t know *smile*” things after I called on her (they are 3, after all, mostly they just like being called on when they raise their hands, it’s not as much about answering the question). I did think that in her time watching Sesame Street and other such shows, that it was possible that she DID actually recognize him and know his name. For all I knew, Sesame Street this morning was an age-appropriate biography of MLK. In any case, I called on her, just to see what she would say. I repeated the question, just to make sure I wasn’t going to get, “um… I want to play Play-Doh.” (why, yes, your child does have trouble focusing).
“What is his name?” I asked.
“His name is President Obama.”
